Low Vision Aids or LVAs refer to a vast array of devices such as stand and hand-held magnifiers, strong magnifying reading glasses, loupes, and small telescopes that assist users with low vision. Available at prescription strengths the devices are designed with greater magnification, feature higher-quality optics and are different from regular glasses and commercially available magnifiers.
Low vision aids are designed for individual tasks. It may be helpful to consider them as tools that assist with specific tasks. Depending on your requirements you may be prescribed a variety of different LVAs to help with various tasks. For example, a certain device may be used for reading, another for watching TV or a separate device for activities that require close up vision.

Stand Magnifiers
Stand magnifiers have built in legs which allow them to stand on the page and maintain correct distance and focus between the lens and the text. These can be particularly useful if your hands are shaky. Stand magnifiers are commonly available as plug-in options or can be fitted with batteries.
Brightfield/Flatfield Magnifiers
A portable option, Brightfield/flatfield magnifiers look like a a paperweight or a ruler with a dome. They are designed to be placed flat onto the page and are moved across the page by the tead allowing for line by line magnification of the text. These are bar or dome magnifiers that look like a paperweight or a shaped ruler.
Round-the-neck Magnifiers
A hands-free option, these magnifiers are useful for hobbies like knitting or when you need to be able to use your hands.
Binoculars & Monoculars
